Working with a designer

At the start of any creative project, getting your vision onto a page, screen, banner, etc. may seem daunting at first, especially if you are new to the process. A designer’s job is to use their experience and talents to help you develop your ideas and fulfil your brief, on time and within your budget. This process is exciting, especially when you and your designer are working well together and have a good understanding of the project and each other’s creative aesthetic. That’s where the magic starts.

Discussing your project with a designer will give them an insight into what you are looking for in design terms. They will ask questions to help inspire their ideas about how best to present your concept. Some clients have very fixed ideas about what they want, while others have only a vague concept. It is up to the designer to interpret your brief and create an artwork that is compelling to the viewer, professionally crafted and doing its job well as a design.

Every designer is different, as all creative people are, but an experienced designer will be more than just creative talent. A good designer will have a solid background in commercial art and the tools to create it. Industry standard software packages will be second nature to them. Design for print requires knowledge of the printing process and how to create artwork that will print as you expect it to. Online graphics and documents demand a different set of knowledge and skills. Great design involves all these acquired skills along with imagination, talent, listening to the client and understanding how to meet their needs and guiding them through the design process.
